8 Home Decor Trends of 2016

Earlier in March 2016, I reviewed a list of interior design trends that are hot this year. Since we’re not all ready to rip out our kitchens or install elaborate wall treatments, this blog post is a follow up to Hot design trends now 2016, where I review this years top home decor trends. If you’re not ready to make structural design changes in your home, here is a list of home decor inspo to get you inspired to redecorate or update your current home decor style.

  1. Scandinavian Style

I know this was number one in design trends, but Scandinavian style home decor really and truly is the look that’s going viral. This style stems out of countries like Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. To summarize the essence of this look, its important to note the clean lines, neutral colours, modern furnishings,  and simplistic vignettes. You will also note that this Nordic look encompasses lots of woods, industrial lighting, exposed storage and shelving, and geometric shapes,  which brings us to our 2nd most popular decor trend…

2. Geometric Shaped Decor & furniture

Geometric decor and furniture styles stem from the Scandinavian look, but because this look is so popular, the geometric shapes are also used in modern, industrial, & farmhouse glam  decor styles as well.

3. Brass, Copper & Golds

Gold, rose gold, and other brass accents are not only IN right now but they can turn any space into a beautifully delicate abode. From table legs to planters, textiles to shelves, here you will see a range of how gold is used. Disclaimer: to get the look that gold is intended to illustrate, the colour scheme of black, white, & gold is the way to go!

4. Farmhouse Style Decor

Noticing all the buzz about reclaimed wood, vintage, and repurposing old furniture? Well it all comes down to capturing the look of living in a french country farmhouse. If you take the essence of what this look is about, you will find a home filled with: pastel colours, furniture using reclaimed wood, antique repurposed furniture, vintage signs, vignettes of decor with white and woods, wire baskets & wooden trays, wicker baskets filled with white and light coloured textiles, faux taxidermy, shiplap walls, burlap, and overall a bright white look. See this gallery of photos which captures the oh so desired farmhouse look we are all craving right now..

5. Metallic Wallpaper

In my previous post, I raved about wall stencilled accent walls over traditional wall paper, but metallic wallpapers cannot be underestimated. They are the epitome of exquisite in any dining room, bathroom, or even baby room. From Silver damask wallpaper, to rose gold polka dots, metallic wallpaper is EVERYTHING!

6. Neutrals & Grey

Now is the time to opt out of that bright red chair or all pink baby room, because neutral tones are the way to go. When we say neutral decor, we mean grey toned walls, ivory couches, cream coloured throw pillows, grey patterned window curtains, and a gender neutral baby room. Neutral is now and frankly always… Take a look at some of these neutral coloured spaces that are cool and cozy…

7. Ink Toned Walls

On the other side of the spectrum of neutral decor, are bold ink coloured walls. This has been a trend for a little while now but is certainly here to stay in 2016. Ink colours include deep dark purples and teals, deep blues and dark greys. Check out this home-spiration…

8. DIY Home Decor and Hacks

Last but certainly not least is Do It Yourself decor including repurposing your own furniture, making an easy DIY coffee table, DIY shelving units, or even making your own throw pillows. DIY is for everyone but now social media is flooded with women literally doing everything themselves with … yes, power tools. Here are a list of  gems I have come across that are DIY projects by well-known DIY handy woman that I’m dying to share with you. Blog links are attached for you to check out how they made it!!

Hot Design Trends Now 2016

Spring is practically days away and people are scrounging to get their unfinished spaces upgraded, redecorated, or renovated. Although I am fairly new to the interior design world, I spend much of my free time researching the hottest decor and design trends. I also follow some of the most talented interior designers  and home design accounts on social media. After almost completing all my major home renovations this winter, I have complied a general consensus of what trends are totally in now and spring/summer ’16.

If you’re thinking about redoing a room in your house or adding a statement to one of your spaces, here is a list of design ideas that are very HOT right now! Most are DIY projects!!!

The Scandinavian Look

Otherwise known as Nordic or the simplistic look, these spaces are very clean cut and bright white. You may find accents of grey, light woods, and plant greens, but they are predominately black and white….my fav…

These spaces are the epitome of less is more, with clean lines, angular shapes, modern or industrial furnishings and decor pieces.

The Ikea brand was born in a Scandinavian country, therefore, you will find many nordic and simplistic home furnishings there. You will also notice the Scandinav designed home calls for white on white walls, and sterile looking spaces exquisitely decorated.

Board & Batten

This design idea has been around for a while but its resurfacing in a way that make spaces more striking. Some people refer to it as wainscotting, paneling, or custom mouldings. Here are a few great ways to use board and batten to make a room your guests will envy you for…

Dining rooms

Hallways & Staircases

Mud Rooms

Bathrooms

& spaces with custom designer mouldings…

Wall Stencils

Wall paper is a timeless way to create an accent wall, but using a wall stencil and paint is an easy way YOU can change a room and this trend is hotter than ever right NOW. Take a look at these wall stencilled rooms by various designers that can make you turn green…with envy. Wall stencils can be found at Cutting Edge Stencils.

Two toned Kitchens

When I look up kitchen ideas online, you wouldn’t believe that more times than not you will see that many brave home owners are actually mixing up their top and bottom kitchen cabinets and islands. White kitchens with a black island is a popular go to, or white cabinets on the bottom with open shelves on the top is another rustic favourite. Check out these stunning two toned kitchen ideas…

Farmhouse Kitchen Sinks

Farmhouse style decor is whole other blog post altogether and something that is booming in all the latest design blogs. However, here we point out nothing else but the kitchen sink. This deep set sink is all the rage in modern and industrial kitchens today. Look at how charming they are …

Brass Kitchen/bath Fixtures & Accents

Lastly but more excitingly are these bathrooms and kitchen accents. Brass or gold accents in a black and white space will leave you jaw dropped. I don’t care what your design style is, these accents are undeniably striking and can work in any home. See how brass hardware, gold grout, and brass lighting fixtures work in these simple spaces…

These current design trends are just the tip of the iceberg. There are major shifts in home decor, tiles, and more! Stay tuned for more blog posts on what’s trending and what @designwithrev is up to!

Basement Overhaul Makeover

This renovation and makeover is by far my favourite because we decided to create our basement into the ultimate entertainment room.

What started out to be a simple lipstick makeover, turned out to be a work of art for Design with Rev. My design inspiration was the sweet farmhouse look as well as making the space look white & bright.

To begin, let us show you our basement when we purchased the home…

I know. Ghetto right!? This small room was covered in wall to wall 70’s aging beige coloured wall paper, and you can tell that the previous owners did NOTHING to update this room (or house for that matter) since its inception. Where do we begin?!?

First things first, we took down the wall paper, sanded the walls of decade old wall paper glue,  and prepped for painting.

All trim and doors needed a lot of TLC (aka coats of paint and caulking). Then, we decided to do a little extra for the room and added a chair rail and split up the colours to white on white on the bottom and fine silver on the top.

*Replaced the blinds  *Repainted the doors  *Installed new door handles  *Hung the tv & hid the wires through the wall.

We didn’t replace anything major like closet doors, but we painted them white (from weathered beige) and installed new sleek hardware from the old brassy ones.

On to the furniture….

Construction of the custom shelving unit

I used to have a dark brown IKEA KALLAX unit that I used as a TV stand, but Doron insisted on making a custom piece for the entire wall. I agreed as long as it maintained that KALLAX look that I loved so much but in white! Because we kept the same KALLAX cupboard hole dimensions, we were able to buy matching doors that IKEA sells and installed them on this custom shelf.

The next project was to think of how to incorporate more seating in addition to our comfy love seat.  One friday night, Doron was hanging with his friends and ended up sitting on the floor when it dawned on him to build a small custom bench/window ledge for additional seating which fits the farmhouse theme (below)

In one Saturday afternoon, Doron put together a bench from scratch using leftover wood. He painted the base white and stained and lacquered the top to match the rest of the wood accents in the room.

Next our infamous IKEA hack farmhouse coffee table was created…. See an earlier blog post for details on how it was created.

The next big project we designed was building a bar and added bar seating.

We love the whole industrial table and shelving look, so we decided to buy a few 2×4’s and iron plumbing pipes…

After cutting the wood planks the length of our couch, we sanded and stained them chocolate, and used a satin finish polyurethane. The iron legs were spray painted black to make them pop, and finally all the pieces were put together and screwed onto the wood.

We found 3 rustic bar stools that fit the space perfectly which added even more seating. When unused, the chairs are nicely tucked in and the whole bar table area remains very compact.

The Bar

After much debate and browsing on pinterest, we decided to make a custom bar counter and shelving. The whole unit was designed and built on 2 things: 1. the doors we found in my dad’s basement, and 2. our beloved wine fridge that we got for a steal on kijiji!

Here we begin with the frame based on the door and fridge measurements.

20160217_132910.jpgTo maintain the farmhouse look, we made a butcher block countertop by gluing together 4 planks of wood (similar to how we built to coffee table top).

The butcher block countertop was well sanded, stained using chocolate coloured stain, and  lacquered with matte polyurethane. Lastly, Doron finished the look with a wooden back and side splash and incorporated the chair rail into the counter top look.

Before we installed the bar shelf, we added a feature wall by installing hickory coloured laminate flooring behind the bar wall.

Next we installed the stained and lacquered shelf by drilling iron pipes from the wall and ceiling to be able to hold the heavy bottles.

And then my favourite part!!!!!!!!

Wine glass holder HACK using T Moulding

We created a wine glass holder HACK by cutting a T Mould and drilled them upside down into the bottom of the shelf. It doesn’t get better than that my friends!!

After all the furniture gets installed, comes the best part…..decorating. The following is the final look of our farmhouse renovated basement.

Whole Roasted Sea Bass

Tonight we tried a new recipe that has us salivating at just the thought of it….
Whole Roasted Sea Bass.

First off we made a trip to the local Asian Supermarket (T&T) where they have lots of fresh fish to choose from.

image

You can also goto the nearest farmers market or fish market…
We bought 2 for approx.  $17 dollars and the clerks were nice enough to de-scale and gut the fish for us. If you must do it yourself, I recommend YouTube for how-to’s…

Next, we seasoned and marinated our fish…
Season with lots of salt and pepper inside and outside.

Cut slits on the tops and stuff with thin lemon slices

image

Then on the inside, stuff with fresh basil and lemon slices (don’t forget to add lots of salt and pepper

image

Next drizzle those bad boys with tons of Olive oil inside and out

image

And let them sit to marinate while you make your side dishes (today it’s scalloped potatoes and steamed   broccoli).

image

Bake for 30 Mins or so, or until it’s as crispy as you like at 375° F. If you have another side like potatoes in the oven as well, you can leave it for 45 minutes or so.  Broil for 3-5 Mins at the end for extra crispiness.

And…….
VOILA

image

Baked Sea Bass with scalloped potatoes and steamed broccoli! It’s smooth and it tastes like butter… Pair with your favourite Pinot Grigio. It’s also a great dinner party idea because it’s easy and a show stopper!
